Donna shared this great song that builds as you go along.  She had flannel pieces for a boat, plane, train, car, and horse.  At tne end, Donna has the children close their eyes and she takes one of the pieces off the board.  Then, the children open their eyes and see if they know which piece is missing.  A great visualization technique which builds skills for reading later on!

Ten Little Candles

(I made a cake out of brown flannel, and 10 candles from red, white and blue flannel.  I used yellow flannel for the flames.  As a blow the candles out two at a time, I take them off of the cake)

 

Ten little candles on a chocolate cake,

Wh! Wh! Now there are eight.

Eight little candles on candlesticks,

Wh! Wh! Now there are six.

Six little candles and not one more,

Wh! Wh! now there are four.

Four little candles, red, white, and blue,

Wh! Wh! now there are two.

Two little candles sitting in the sun.

Wh! Wh! now there are none.

Color Umbrellas

 

I believe this rhyme is similar to one that Alyson shared at one of our YSL meetings.  You'll need to make 6 flannel umbrellas (red, yellow, blue, orange, purple, and green).  I found this on the Internet in several places, but I can't find an author's name for it.

 

Here are some umbrellas,

Just for me and you (Put red, yellow, and blue umbrellas on the board.)

Can you name their colors?

Red, yellow, blue.

 

Here are more umbrellas

The prettiest we've seen (Put purple, orange, and green umbrellas on board.)

Now let's name their colors.

Clown Face

 

Build the face shape by shape on the board.  Children can be encouraged to find the colors of the shape in their own clothing.

Little Red House

There was a little RED house

And inside was a YELLOW house etc.

 

Make graduating houses out of felt.  In my version the last house it just a very small house, but Linda shared that they hide something that relates to their theme inside the final house.

Miss Mouse

Place 6 different colored houses on the flannel board.

Have an animal hidden behind each house.

Explain to kids that we are looking for Miss Mouse and they need to help by repeating with you, "Miss Mouse, Miss Mouse are you in the (insert color) house?"

Ask at each house the above phrase and reveal 5 times an animal that is definitely not a mouse.

Under the final house you finally reveal Miss Mouse.

Five Brown Buns

Create five buns (or cupcakes) out of flannel.  Mine are just brown ovals stuck on top of rectangles and decorated with sparkles.  You'll also need five pennies large enough to really see.  I just blew up a picture from the internet and glued them on to felt.  Here is the rhyme.  Sharon, Lois and Bram perform this song so you can also listen to the song instead of singing it yourself.

 

Five brown buns in a bakery shop (all buns on the board).

Five brown buns with the sugar on the top.

Along came a man with a penny in his hand.

He took one bun and away he ran (replace first bun with one penny).

 

Four brown buns in a bakery shop.

Four brown buns with the sugar on the top.

Along came a man with a penny in his hand.

He took one bun and away he ran (replace second bun with a penny.

 

Etc. until you have no more buns and all pennies on the board.

 

No brown buns in a bakery shop.

No brown buns with the sugar on the top.

Along came a girl with a penny in her hand.

She took one look and away she ran.

 

I have the kids help me count the five pennies and mention that is five cents.

 Ten Little Mittens

 

Place all 10 mittens along a piece of yarn to be the clothesline.  The mittens can be any color, but there must be at least one red mitten.

 

Ten warm mittens, hanging on the line, one blows away and then there are nine (remove first mitten).

Nine warm mittens, one without a mate, a squirrel carries one away and that leaves eight (remove second mitten etc.).

Eight warm mittens, just eight not eleven, one gets buried in the snow and that leaves seven.

Seven warm mittens, which one do you pick?

I'll pick the red one and that leaves six (remove the red mitten).

Six warm mittens, put one on to try.

Then you take it from the line and that leaves five.

Five warm mittens, we had ten before!

A fluffy bunny needs one and that leaves four!

Four warm mittens, two for you and two for me, I lost one on the ski slope and that leaves three.

Three warm mittens, looking very new, one falls into the mud and that leaves two.

Two warm mittens, drying in the sun, a bird comes down and snatches it and that leaves one.

One warm mitten, what good is one?

A little mouse can have a bed, and that leaves none!

 

I also created a flannel from the book, "The Mitten" by Jan Brett.  On her web page you can printout all the characters and I just glued the paper onto felt.  I had a teen volunteer color them to look like the book illustrations.  By it being a flannel board I can use the story with much younger children than would sit through the book.

Dinosaur flannelboard

 

This is very good for toddlers.  Need 5 dinosaurs of various colors

 

There were 5 dinosaurs

Standing in a row

And the orange one said

That he had to go

So he walked away,

Very very slow,

STOMP, STOMP, STOMP, STOMP, STOMP.

 

There were 4 dinosaurs

Standing in a row

And the blue one said...

 

Repeat with the rest of figures.  Encourage kids or adults to stomp feet or slap hands on thighs during 'STOMP's.
